 | I now realize that this Web site has not yet acknowledged Aubespin Scholarship winner Shanxi Upsdell's speech at the Friday night banquet. Well, the impact, the weight, the emotion can't be conveyed in a blurb, but let's just say this young woman representing our best and brightest of future copy editors was genuine, humble and still already influential.  | Update: The autographed Chris Wienandt Leather Pants edition of the ACES newsletter drew $50 at Friday night's auction. And the winner (whose name might rhyme with "Merry") wants to regift it! She plans to hang on to the newsletter for one year, then donate it back to the 2009 silent auction. Next year, it could be yours! (This winner whose name might rhyme with "Merri" says, however, she's keeping the whip she won.)

 | From Jim Thomsen: My banquet table, Table 23, had the highest pledged amount for the ACES education funds among all tables Friday night. Most of the $1,650 raised came from Orange County Register copy editor Jill Reed. Her explanation? "My alimony check just came in."

 | From Jim Thomsen: Best quote from an ACES session so far: "I have a degree in journalism but never used it until I got to the zoo and got a job as a bus driver." That was spoken by Debbie Andreen, who now heads up communications for the San Diego Zoo, at the "What Else Can I Do With These Skills?" seminar Friday afternoon.

 | An interesting topic has been posed on <a>David Sullivan's blog</a> about the future and identity of ACES, and it's sure to generate lots of ideas.

 | You may have heard that Frontier Airlines filed for bankruptcy. I have been told by someone who knows someone at the airline that passengers booked on Frontier should not worry about flights being canceled. For what it's worth.

 | Also heard last night: A Washington Post copy editor who was optimistic about the paper's new two-touch rule (for most copy), which began this week. More on that later. -- NH

 | It's true that the majority of presenters get nervous in the minutes and perhaps hours before they lead a session at the conference. But one learns that once you get going and if you've got the material, you're fine. And our presenters have the material. Salute to all of them -- they're volunteering their time to bring the conference's goods. -- Neil H.

 | From Jim Thomsen: It was fun this afternoon to introduce my Kitsap Sun colleague, Kim Rubinstein, to fellow Kansas University grad Amanda Hay. With us was Louisiana State University grad Beth Colvin. So it was a perhaps-rare meeting of this last season's college football and basketball champions. And once I realized that, this graduate of Western Washington University — which hasn't won squat, ever — backed away quietly in sporting shame.

 | It's just before 7 a.m. and I see little snow flurries out my 12th floor window and a light dusting on the grass outside the hotel. More is expected today. I am pretty sure I forgot to pack my snowshoes.

 | Rumor has it that Hank Glamann will join a session during today's 2:45 block. Wonder what and where it will be???
